The Garwood Grill
This week I though I would shake things up a little bit. Over the past two months I have been writing about lunch joints that i would bet most people hadn't heard of - let alone been to. This week I wanted to focus on something that I truly love - Breakfast. I am actually almost mad at society because at some point in our vast existence - a group of people determined that Breakfast needs to be eaten in the morning. A POX UPON THEE!!!!! I know that it is not racist, or sexist, or agist - but it has to be some kind of "ist" - doesn't it? But I digress. Back to Breakfast - which brings me to the Garwood Grill. Located on the corner of Garwood and Pembina this long time institution has been a favourite of mine for some time.
I met my lunch mate at the Garwood Sunday at noon. As a result of this mistimed meeting - we were waiting for about 15 minutes. The line up was out the door. That being said - I wasn't leaving - when the idea of the Garwood was presented, I had it in my mind and nothing else would suffice. While we waited in line there was a veritable fashion show of food entries that passed us by. From the incredible pizzas (when you order bacon on your pizza there is at least a package of bacon in full strips that adorn the melted mozzarella) to the fresh clubhouse sandwiches (yes I know - I could be writing about them - and I promise that I will at another point in time) to the numerous pasta and steak options. Eat your Heart out Ralph Lauren.
When we grab a seat I don't even entertain the menu with a view. The Garwood Big Breakfast is the only thing on my mind. Why is this the only choice? Simple - It has everything. I dare you see see plate when your food comes on out. With 2 eggs, 3 pieces of sausage, 3 pieces of bacon (i have never had only 3 pieces on my plate - usually around 5), hash browns and toast it is the only breakfast worth eating. One of my favourite parts about the breakfast is that I don't have to choose between bacon and sausage. To me it is like choosing which niece I love more - it is a lose lose situation.
Everything comes out and it looks delicious. I always order the hash browns well done - since I like a good crunch to them. Although these hash browns are a little under seasoned - they are real. No tater tots or pan fries that all look the same and have the identical dimensions. Just real human prepared potatoes.
I leave nothing on my plate. NOTHING. My lunching partner said it best "This is very delicious but greasy". There is not a thing I could argue with. If you want a light fare breaky - go and eat some zero calorie, zero fat, zero fun yogurt and throw in some cardboard tasting granola. If you want a Big Breakfast - head to the Garwood Grill for the Garwood Big Breakfast. You will enter a simple human and leave a lumberjack.
